March 2004. Chris Moss - Former MD Sony Music Australia. MD Warner
Music Australia
"For Steve
it has always been about the music, from his humble beginnings as a
dj around Sydney, he found himself working as a Promotion Manager for
the biggest company in the market at that time which was CBS Records.
Continuing to follow his passion he then took a stint working in radio
in promotions at 2MMM in Sydney and then after a period in which he
set up his own clothing manufacturing company, he returned to what was
now Sony Records as the Label Marketing Manager for Epic Records.
The landscape of successful artists in Australia would potentially be
very different were it not for Steve Millard. Many of them such as Wham,
George Michael, Celine Dion and Michael Jackson have gone on to be household
names but I can assure you in the beginning it wasn't that way. Others,
such as Big Audio Dynamite and Deep Forest all benefited from the unique
and tenacious persistence of Steve Millard. He always possessed a dogged
determination for those artists he believed deserved success.
One of the stronger aspects of Steve's professional character was his
ability to establish very strong personal working relationships with
the artist and their management and to this day still retains many good
friendships with these people.
People such as Steve are now very few and far between, a true music
person."
March
2004. Trevor Smith - Former Program Director Triple M Broadcasting Sydney
And present CEO of Here and There Communications
I've known
Steve Millard since he was the National Promo guy for CBS Records/Sony
Music back in the early 80s before we hired him to be the promotions
director at Triple M in Sydney.
His passion for music is boundless and because of his Aquarian nature
he has always been at the forefront of technology, and how it could
benefit the industry, as evidenced by his latest piece of technological
magic.
One of the things I admire most about Steve is his never-ending dedication
to the task at hand, and I wish him all the best for the success of
the DFS updateable disc.
Triple
M - Patrick Buckley:
National Sales Mgr 86/87
Over a two-year period I worked with Steve on many projects and monitored
others. Steve's approach to marketing and promotions is a determined
and creative one. During his time at the radio station he has been instrumental
in the culmination of many of our promotional initiatives.
Part of his job function was to communicate and liaise with marketing
companies that regularly advertise on the station. In doing so Steve
formulated promotional packages with accounts such as Coca Cola, AGL,
West Coast Cooler, Thomas Cook, Qantas, News Limited, and John Fairfax,
and maintained a good working relationship with these companies.
His pet project has been the marketing of Triple M merchandise, i.e.:
clothing apparel. Prior to Steve's arrival we would have sold 800 items
of clothing. Steve saw the potential for our merchandise, redesigned
a series of logo's, and this summer (86/87) achieved a summer sell in
campaign of 32,000 units.
To achieve this end he broadened the market by expanding the number
of outlets to include Grace Bros, General Pants, Surf Dive N' Ski and
Cue Design. Steve leaves Triple M with our best wishes and carries my
strongest recommendation for any position encompassing the marketing
of music, clothing or allied industry.

John Sackson:
Managing Director, Columbia and Epic
Steve Millard commenced with Sony Music Entertainment on 31 January
1983 as New South Wales Promotions Manager, a position he held until
March '85, at which time he accepted a position with 2MMM.
Steve returned to Sony Music on 5th November 1990 to take up the position
of International Marketing Manager (Columbia & Epic). Steve was
then promoted to various marketing roles within the National Head office
and for the past two years has held the position of Senior Director
Marketing for the Epic label.
I have been involved professionally with Steve for over 14 years and
I have always found him to be one of the most talented, skilful and
passionate marketing people I have ever been involved with.
He has always displayed great vision, tenacity and dedication to his
marketing responsibilities, particularly in the vital area of artist
development where his planning, determination and "never say die"
approach contributed to many success stories including Deep Forest,
Reef, Ben Folds Five, Macy Gray, Travis, B*Witched, Fuel, Ally McBeal,
Pearl Jam, Korn, Celine Dion and Mandy Moore.
Over the years, Steve established himself as one of the music industry's
leading marketers, earning respect and popularity both inside the company
and externally.
Recent Global downsizing within the Sony Music organization has unfortunately
led to Steve's retrenchment. I would strongly recommend Steve for any
marketing related position and I would be only too pleased to provide
a verbal reference upon request.

Brett Crossley- Interactive Production Manager
I have known and worked with Steve Millard since I joined Sony Music
two years ago. At that time, Sony Music Australia was just starting
to ramp up its activities in the field of interactive CD-ROM and Enhanced
CD (CD Extra) discs, with a view to doing the same with DVD in the future.
We have now succeeded beyond our expectations in this area, with a clear
mandate from consumers and recognition of same from our Label personnel
and senior Management. We are currently releasing about 10-12 enhanced
CD titles per month, and are set to do the same with DVD.
The above would not have been possible without Steve's vision and support.
He is in my view unique, in being able to combine a clear understanding
of the technology with a powerful marketing concept to deliver a compelling
value-add for the consumer, the end result being the market leadership,
which we have enjoyed for some time. In fact, from a Marketing perspective
it would be fair to say that Steve was the driving force behind all
of our recent technological innovations.
It was with great regret that I learned of Steve's departure from Sony,
however I have no doubt that he will continue in the same vein in his
next position, and I am certainly hopeful that we will be able to work
together again in the future.
I would be only too pleased to be contacted for further information
if required.
16th August 2000-Sony Music Entertainment (UK) Limited
Brian Yates- VP Strategic Marketing
I have known Steve Millard for the past five years in my capacity as
VP International, SME (UK) Ltd, representing UK repertoire such as George
Michael, Jamiroquai, B*Witched, Charlotte Church, Des'ree and Reef amongst
others. Steve was one of my key international contacts at Sony Music
Australia and I always found that his determination, artist development,
viewpoint and professionalism made him exemplary in his field.
Steve has a very personable character, trustworthy, hardworking and
will no doubt continue to use his strong skills within the entertainment
business to further his career.
