1979- 1985: Entertainment Agent and DJ -
Sydney - Premier Entertainment.

This period gave Steve a great grounding in which to begin his career in the music and entertainment industry. At just 20 and with eyes set on becoming a Sales/Promo. Rep’ or a Radio DJ, he was considered too young. He settled on band agency work and Club DJ'ing.

As an agent, Steve booked most of the hot acts of the time. At Sydney's Premier Entertainment, he engaged artists for various venues like, Men At Work, Midnight Oil, Australian Crawl, Divinyls, Richard Clapton, and Mondo Rock. His role included talent fee negotiation, strategic planning, and marketing through radio and press. It also extended to publicity, overseeing the gate take, and remunerating bands and staff.

As a Club DJ, Steve worked at many of the main venues, including a six-year residency at The Tivoli, a prestigious live music venue. His engagement outlasted the club. This period gave Steve a grassroots understanding of the Entertainment Industry. Concurrently he was exposed to its thriving underground culture. “Each week I would walk into the record companies and get all the new music so I’d stay right on top of it.”

It was Steve’s Tivoli shows that boosted his profile within the music companies and following the club’s closure; he was offered a job at CBS. “It was the number one record company…. at the time I didn’t realise that a relationship with then CBS, now Sony would continue through most of my working life”.
